真っ白な天井にダウンライトの単眼が明るく光って私を見下ろす。私は光を見つめる。光の向こうに蓮の花が咲く。泥の上に咲く涅槃の花だ。

市川沙央『ハンチバック』2023

The guiding theme of this noboru is based on the Dharmic concept of “nirvana,” which has garnered several meanings/interpretations for the many territories in Asia and beyond where Buddhist teachings have traveled and changed through time. For many schools of thought/worship, nirvana alludes to a state of illumination that transcends the human realm of metempsychosis, also known as reincarnation and rebirth. Our collective asks: what flowers grow in the garden of queer nirvana? How do they look like? We sought the answer to this question not by articulate thought nor prayer, but rather by the quasi-meditative exercise of combining poetry, photography, paper-folding exercises, and astral charts; evading all possible answers, but instead inviting our audience to dream alongside our own erotic dreams.
